Electricity

You never know how accustom or dependent you are on something until it is gone.

On Christmas day, that evening. There was a HUGE storm that hit us. It was COLD, the wind was howling, and then it started to Hail. With the Hail, and wind, beating the roof and sides of the home it made me so thankful for Shelter. I couldn't imagine being out in that weather, especially with a lil'one. Right when I was being thankful for the shelter, the power went out. Immediatly the baby and I were in pitch dark and the cold started seeping in. Luckly, my parents had there big Camp trailer parked outside. They had battery powered lights and a butane heater. So we packed up and moved into there trailer to wait out the storm. It was very cosy with the family and we had a fun time.

But I kept thinking. If they weren't around, I would be worried about keeping a newborn warm, in this COLD. The house doesn't have, any other source of heat other then Electric. Growing up we had a wood stove, so when the power went out, we still had heat, light, and could cook on the stove. Being with out power really wasn't a big deal. Plus, out on the rez, we are equipt for living with out running water or electricity. But if you aren't prepared, then your TOAST. Cold Toast at that.

We ended up not being with out power for long. But it did make me realize, I would love an alternate power/heat/cooking/lighting source other then Electricity. Also, made me realize how i need to know were my emergecy items are. So I could easy get to them if the power went out again. I will take this storm as a warning and try to get prepared for some other semi'emegency. :)

There is nothing like motherhood to make one realize how ill prepared we've been all this time! ha
In so many ways, when you are prepared the fear really does dissipate.

I totally agree. When we were without power for 9 days due to Hurricane Ike, I vowed I would be buying a generator before next hurricane season!

A trailer is a great emergancy prepardness purchase in my opinion; its got it all: beds, stove, heater. We still have yet to buy one but as soon as we get a truck to pull it I'm getting me one for play and prepardness!!

Definitely...definitely. I have some flashlights in places that will never be moved unless they will immediately be returned. That way, I always know where they are.

Being a mother and knowing your kids are warm, fed, and sheltered....is a comfort that brings a special kind of peace to your heart than as oppose to something else.... i learned that too, when we were out of water and electric for two days...
